Cambridge Nursing Home To Shut Doors By Year's End

A Cambridge nursing home is shutting down, forcing 125 residents to relocate to other facilities.

Sancta Maria Nursing Facility made the announcement Friday, saying it intended to sell or lease its buildings and stop all operations by the end of the year.

Nick Gilbert, the administrator, said the first step for the nursing home will be to meet with residents and their families to discuss their next move.

“We work closely with families in finding other nursing homes in the immediate area that are capable of caring for their loved one  — and this is done with our social services department,” Gilbert said.

The facility cited “major financial challenges,” including $5 million in deficits over the past six years, below-cost Medicaid reimbursement rates and the increasing expense of keeping up its 50-year-old building.

“All of our staff are dedicated to making sure that the relocation of our residents is done with dignity and grace,” Gilbert said.
