Mass. Now Has More Than 5,000 Reported Coronavirus Cases

Massachusetts now has more than 5,000 reported coronavirus cases.

The newest statistics from the state show 5,752 confirmed cases as of Monday, with 56 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Massachusetts had just one known case from Feb. 1 until March 2: a UMass Boston student who had traveled to Wuhan, China.

On March 2, the state reported its second case — a woman who had traveled to Italy.

The third case came three days later. But by March 10, there were 92 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state, and the number of cases began to grow exponentially. (See our charts and map for a more detailed breakdown.)

The increase in cases has followed a rapid increase in testing starting around March 12, when the state reported around 200 tests completed. There have been 42,793 tests run as of Monday.
