The plane carrying Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence skidded off the runway in heavy rain Thursday night at LaGuardia Airport. It was stopped by the runway's "arrestor bed," a form of crushable concrete.

Here & Now's Robin Young speaks with Chris Oswald of the Airports Council International about how the arrestor bed works and what other safety features are in place for a runaway plane.

Guest

Chris Oswald, vice president of safety and regulatory affairs at Airports Council International-North America.

This segment aired on October 28, 2016.
