The Supreme Court issued a decision on former President Donald Trump's claim that he is immune from prosecution on charges that he tried to subvert his 2020 election loss.

In a 6-to-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have absolute immunity for their core constitutional powers and official acts. But the court says former presidents do not have immunity for unofficial acts, sending the case back to a trial judge to figure out whether Trump's acts were official or unofficial.

Here & Now's Celeste Headlee and Lisa Mullins speak with Melissa Murray, New York University law professor and co-author of "The Trump Indictments: The Historic Charging Documents with Commentary," and Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer under former President George W. Bush and now a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School.

This segment aired on July 1, 2024.
